Frequently Asked Questions
When can I apply for my provisional?
You can apply for a provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday, 16 if you are registered disabled, or unless you also want to pass your tractor or moped test then it’s up to 3 months before your 16th birthday. You can apply through the Post Office; but the easiest way is online. The cost is currently £34. More information and apply
Where do you do lessons/courses?
I live near Llandudno. I work around Penrhyn Bay, Rhos On Sea, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Glan Conwy, Conwy, Deganwy, Llandudno Junction, Mochdre and surrounding areas. I also do courses around Bangor, Llandudno and Bala.
If your interested in a course; then the first step is to have an assessment drive and then discuss the hours needed to pass.
Should I do extra practice with mum, dad or a friend?
Any private practice with a friend or family member can help greatly. It gives you further experience, but also note, what mum, dad or a friend were taught years ago, may not be the correct procedure any more. But the extra practice is well worth it - just don’t scare them!
What to bring to my lesson?
You need to bring:
provisional licence (photocard)
the fee for the lesson, unless you have already paid online.
If you are supposed to wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure you wear them. A eyesight check will be conducted at a distance of 20.5m/67f.
Face mask if required by Government guidelines.
I'd also recommend comfortable footwear.
Theory & Driving test cost?
See the link "Book a test" on home page. This is all about the current costs and how to book your tests without being redirected. Also see my other "links" with helpful points and videos about the tests.
Students have paid on bogus websites and incurred almost twice the cost and been guaranteed a free re test which doesn't exist. Please follow the links page I have set up.
How long will it take to pass my driving test?
Difficult question to answer as everyone learns at a different pace; and many factors must be considered. The DVSA recommend 45 hours of tuition with an Approved Driving Instructor [ADI] together with 22 hours of private practice. We have had students who have passed after 10 lessons. TG DriverTraining has a high pass rate and an indication of the number of lessons required can be given after a few lessons.
Should I start revising for my Theory test
The sooner it is done the better. I would start revising before my 17th birthday. Then book the theory test as soon as possible, then you will have 2 years to pass your practical test. A good tip is to watch others drive and start noticing the signs as a passenger before your 17th birthday.
First Lesson?
You will be driving on your first lesson; the amount depends on your history/experience. All lessons will be tailored for the individual, but if this is your first lesson, let me reassure you that after a few basics, we will be practising moving off and stopping.
Intensive Course?
Intensive Courses are popular with learners of any age, because they make it possible to learn to drive within 3 days. I do various courses; tailored to the individual. There's a lot to cover in a few days so usually for example, a 3 day is for somebody who has had a few lessons prior to the course. Please send me a quick message about courses and your driving history.
How do I know if I’m with an Approved and Registered Driving instructor (ADI)?
Good question. A fully qualified instructor will have a green licence in the top left-hand corner of their windscreen. A pink licence (trainee instructor) means they are qualified but yet to complete the final exam giving them the title "ADI".
Cancelling a lesson?
All I ask for is 24 hours notice; so I can offer it to another student. Less than 24 hours notice will incur the lesson fee sadly. Text is best, but please wait for a acknowledgement.
